St John Fisher (1469-1535)
Born in Beverley and educated at Cambridge. He was ordained a priest and became the confessor of Henry VII’s mother. He was instrumental in developing the curriculum of study at Cambridge University and tutored Prince Henry who became Henry VIII. He was appointed Bishop of Rochester and Chancellor of Cambridge. When the King began divorce proceedings, John opposed it and was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Here, Pope Paul III appointed John as Cardinal and in retaliation, Henry VIII had him beheaded. His feast day is June 22nd.
