The aims of the course
The main aim of this course is to develop ability to communicate effectively in each of the languages. The ability to speak at least one other language creates many opportunities for young people to study, travel and even work abroad. Throughout the course students will be able to develop their knowledge of the language and the culture of the country.
The course structure
The course covers a variety of topics from tourism to media. All themes are taught via the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing and students have access to a range of authentic media to support their studies.
Subjects /Units studied
Spanish is spoken by around 350 million people worldwide making it the second most widely spoken language in the world. Twenty-two countries have Spanish as their first language. These countries are developing increasingly strong business and tourism links with Britain. Spain has also become Britain’s most popular holiday destination so don’t miss out.
The themes and topics of the GCSE Language courses include:
- People and lifestyle – family & relationships, healthy living, education & work
- Popular culture – free time, customs & traditions, Celebrity culture
- Communication with the world around us – travel & tourism, media & technology, the environment
Students will also have the opportunity to develop their cultural awareness and have access to films, songs and authentic materials in the target language.
How the course is assessed
In Spanish assessment is broken down into the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. These skills are assessed through exams at the end of the course and are worth 25% each.
Resources and additional information
Studying languages can be a benefit for many reasons including employment and holidays. It is important to consider becoming a Dual Linguist. They are a rarity and are therefore in high demand! Students are encouraged to have their own bi-lingual dictionary to support their learning.
