Design and Technology GCSE
The aims of the course
GCSE Design and Technology will enable students to understand and apply iterative design processes through which they explore, create and evaluate a range of outcomes. Students will be encouraged to use creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. The GCSE will provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge from other disciplines, including mathematics, science, art and design, computing and the humanities. Design and Technology incorporates knowledge and understanding of different materials and manufacturing processes in order to design and make prototypes in response to issues, needs, problems and opportunities. Through the critique of the outcomes of Design and Technology activity, both historic and present day, students will develop an understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world and understand that high-quality. Design and Technology is important to the creativity, culture, sustainability, wealth and well-being of the nation and the global community.
The course structure
In Year 9 students will work in all material areas; graphics, resistant materials, textiles and electronics to further knowledge, skills, and ability to incorporate dual materials in a project.
In Year 10 and 11, students will focus on resistant materials, graphics or textiles.
Final coursework – A product working with wood/metal/plastic or Textiles
How the course is assessed
Students will follow the GCSE Full course throughout Years 9 – 11 with a mixture of coursework and written paper. Assessments at the end of Year 11 consists of:
- A written exam—50% of GCSE (2 hour exam)
- NEA (non– exam assessment ) – 50% single design and make task
